About us
Welcome to The Brown Horse — a Georgian coaching inn set in the heart of the Lake District, nestled within the picturesque Winster Valley. The inn has been proudly owned by the Edmondson family for many years. After gaining extensive experience working within the business, Craig and Shaun officially took over from their father in 2018 and have continued to run it with great success. In 2020, Shaun Edmondson was honoured with the title of Pub Chef of the Year.
In 2022, we embarked on an exciting new venture with the launch of our Lake District Woodland Pods — a unique accommodation experience that complements the charm of the inn.
Our commitment to quality and hospitality has been recognised with several awards, including being named Cumbria’s Best Pub & Bar in 2023, followed by My Local Awards’ Best Restaurant in 2026.
At The Brown Horse, we place great value on our local community. Supporting those around us is at the heart of what we do, which is why we regularly contribute to local events and fundraisers throughout the year. Whether it’s donating prizes such as meals for two or overnight stays, providing catering for community events, or supporting the local food bank, we are proud to give back in meaningful ways.
We were proud to play a part in the Save Windermere! campaign, with our chefs providing catering for the event. We encourage our guests and community to support this important initiative, which aims to prevent United Utilities from continuing to discharge untreated sewage into our local lake.
We are also delighted to be hosting a special evening with football legend Jan Moby on 23 June 2026. Tickets are available to book now (via book a table). Proceeds from the evening’s raffle will support The Lakes School and Camps International’s Kenya expedition in 2027, who shared the following message:
